Jargon is a price

A specialist word saves the writer a second and charges the reader an afternoon.

We treat jargon as an access barrier in the same category as cost. Not a similar problem — the same problem, charged differently.

A price excludes people who cannot pay. A specialist word excludes people who were not taught it. Both filters are invisible to whoever set them, because the person writing the word already knows it and the person setting the price can afford it.

The practical version is a rule about our own interface copy: errors say what happened and what to do, in that order. Buttons are verbs. If the product does not know something, it says so. And no sentence goes out that needs a second pass to understand — if it has to be explained, it is not written yet.
